Lillian Byrd has been searching her soul after the gut-wrenching experience of killing someone in self-defense. Scrabbling to make ends meet, she takes a job as a quasi detective, solving life's little mysteries for a pair of eccentric women in one of Detroit's last prestigious neighborhoods. When she spots a corpse on the next-door lawn, she jumps back into honest work as an investigative journalist. Her friend, Mercedes, reveals that the dead woman, Abby Rawson, played on a women's softball team she manages and pressures Lillian into taking her spot. Softball turns to hardball when Lillian not only plunges into a love affair with the team's sought-after pitcher but also goes undercover as an exterminator, a squatter, and a charity worker to investigate Abby's death and the corrupt medical organization she worked for. No one on the team is above suspicion, and as they get closer to snagging the coveted championship title - and Lillian gets closer to discovering the dark truth behind Abby's murder - she fights to keep her new love in her life and literally save her own.

Filled with Lillian Byrd's trademark snark, nail-biting twists and turns, and a thrilling climax, Left Field scores a grand slam that'll leave listeners cheering in the stands.

Left Field Lillian Byrd Crime Series Book 5 (Audible Audio Edition) Elizabeth Sims Dina Pearlman Audible Studios Books

Lillian Byrd is an accidental private investigator. Although she writes for a living, she doesn’t spend enough time writing to actually make a living at it. What she does best is to get herself in a jam then tries to figure out how to get out of it.

Lillian isn’t one of those wealthy trust fund PIs I get so bored reading about. She’s poor. So poor, she’ll do just about anything to make the rent. And, while doing just about anything she manages to run into some real characters. She isn’t perfect, but keeps her wits about her and manages to get out of the scrapes she finds herself in. She falls for the imperfect woman, but only realizes it after she’s found herself knee deep in the woman’s problems. She’s sweet and thoughtful to those who deserve it, like the Pomeroy’s in “Left Field,” but, will fight off the bad guys, and gals, and come out a champ. A champ with a black eye and bloody nose, that is.

And, thankfully, for her devoted fans, Lillian Byrd is back. It’s been a three year dry spell, but she’s back in rare form as she takes her fans through the corrupt and bankrupt Detroit area where she lives. Sometimes she can’t tell the good guys from the bad, but eventually figures it all out.

For some reason this book seemed a lot shorter than the others, but maybe that’s because I practically devoured it as soon as it hit my Kindle. Here’s hoping there’s more in the near future.

Left Field Lillian Byrd Crime Series Book 5 (Audible Audio Edition) Elizabeth Sims Dina Pearlman Audible Studios Books Reviews

I really love Lillian Byrd and will admit to being extremely disappointed when Elizabeth Sims took a break from her. (Rita Farmer doesn't do it for me like Lillian does). So I was so thrilled to discover Left Field. Starting two years after the end of her last escapade, Left Field brings us a changed Lillian (killing your lover will do that to you -- don't worry, it was justified). She's also without Todd the rabbit and without her Caprice, so you really can't blame her for feeling so low. I don't really feel the need to review the plot -- you can read that above. But this is same old classic Lillian -- dorky, falling in love with all the wrong people, and a total soft touch even though she wants you to think she's not (I have a raccoon named Racquel as proof on that one). Oh and getting herself into way too much trouble too. This is also classic Elizabeth, who writes paragraphs I have to read several times so as not to miss anything and uses words I have to look up sometimes. I love this about her because so much lesbian fiction is superficial, skim-able -- good but not deep. Elizabeth and Lillian are deep without being pretentious. Also I do love that while Lillian enjoys a lovely romantic life nothing is all rosebuds and rainbows and happily ever after with her. As far as the mysteries go -- I have read reviews accusing Elizabeth of throwing the kitchen sink into her books, and I disagree. Again, her books are more complex than your average lesbian mystery and she likes to tie up all the loose ends, which I think makes things more plausible. And as an added bonus, Elizabeth always has fantastic secondary characters in her books -- Lou for example, Lillian's friend-wishes-she-was-her-gf, who I think is absolutely adorable, and in this book the super freaky and super fun Domenica and Flora. So anyway, definitely take the time to read this book -- actually, start with Elizabeth's first Lillian book, then the other three, then this one -- you'll appreciate it more.
Once again, I invited Lillian Byrd into my reading list, and once again, she did not disappoint. From the eccentric mother-daughter team of the Pomeroys, to a quasi-love triangle, to the motives of people who are, by their nature, trustworthy, this one has it all. When a member of a local softball team winds up dead in the yard of a neighbor of the Pomeroys, for whom Lillian is acting as a private eye/researcher/finder of list things, Lillian finds herself with an assignment to write up something about it for the local paper. Her hunt for facts leads her to government employee offices, dealing with squatters (and roping them in to help at one point, thanks to their specialized knowledge), drive-by shootings, playing left field for that softball team, and generally nosing around in the way we've come to know and love. As usual, she gets the job done and identifies not one but two uncommon murderers, fortunately outsmarts a sure death, and ends up with an offer for a real job on the campaign of someone who intends to run for governor. The love triangle thing really does not go anywhere, and I view that as a good thing it involves acting in ways she is not comfortable, and she says so, which is rather empowering - in quite a number of books, one character will just shrug and do things they find distasteful because the story dictates there must be a "happily ever after" in the love department, and life just isn't like that all the time. While you do not necessarily have to read the previous four books in this series to follow what is going on, thanks to Sims' dropping of details here and there to keep you on track of who is who and what has gone before, but it helps to know the history behind the main character and those around her.
So good to see you back Lillian! Just loved Left Field, a very welcome and long awaited addition to the 4 previous Lillian Byrd series. You will enjoy all of the characters especially the eccentric Pomeroy's. Flora a real hoot and her mother Dominica to another favorite of mine Lou the Detroit Animal Control officer/psychic/ computer wiz, who you could write a book about just her alone. The mystery angle was great and of course Lillian's humor and narrative of her beloved Detroit keeps running through the book. Guess I just love Lillian because she makes me laugh out loud and can get into so many scrapes and just seems to stay on the outside edge of the law. That leads me to another character Detective Sorrel, think you will like him too for some reason I see a future character in Lillian's life. You don't have to read the first four Lillian Byrd books and can read this as a stand alone but don't know why you wouldn't want to. For an enjoyable read that will put a smile on your face, think Left Field will do it for you.
